Research Animal Resources (RAR) strives to enhance the quality and integrity of scientific research by offering exceptional animal care, expert resources, and collaborative support that empowers researchers to conduct ethical and impactful studies for the advancement of knowledge and public health.

The Training Director for RAR is responsible for overseeing and managing the comprehensive training program for research animal users, including RAR staff and external customers within the University of Minnesota (students, staff, and faculty). This role ensures that training aligns with IACUC policies, RAR standard operating procedures (SOPs), and Biosafety and Occupational Health requirements. The Director will foster a collaborative environment between the training team and users (RAR staff and researchers), ensuring training needs are met and communication is maintained.

This position reports to the RAR Executive Director and works with members of the RAR Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to provide strategic planning, organization, and direction within RAR. The Training Director identifies and develops broad operational goals and objectives, directs significant programs, and operates with a significant level of independence within a matrixed department. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and enforcing policies, procedures, and standards as well as cooperative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent will be a member of the RAR Senior Leadership Team. This role will work primarily on site with occasional remote work opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • DVM or equivalent from ECVFC or PAVE with at least 6 years of experience
  • Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
  • Experience in developing and leading research animal training courses.
  • Working knowledge of federal laws, regulations, and procedures pertaining to the care and use of research animals, as well as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative environment and manage a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documented success in developing and implementing training programs
  • LATG and/or CMAR certification
  • CPTM™ or other professional training certification
